‘Hello, little brother!’ Kevin’s excitement to see his younger brother again was very noticeable. He smiled at Nick and gave him a tight hug. ‘Choking me, Kev,’ Nicholas calmly answered. Kevin let go. ‘Is Joe here yet?’ Kevin threw his bags onto the couch in their tour bus. ‘He had some unfinished business, so he’ll meet us at the venue.’ ‘Right… Joe and unfinished business.’ Nick chuckled a little and sat down. ‘Won’t it be weird without Danielle?’ ‘Yes, it will… but it’s just 2 weeks, she’ll join us after that.’ Kevin sat down next to Nick. ‘Right…’ Nick looked at the table. Kevin could sense something was wrong, but he couldn’t decide whether to ask or to just let it be. He chose to go with the last option, knowing that if Nick wanted to talk about it, he would. There fell a silence between them. ‘Does it get easier?’ Nick looked into Kevin’s eyes, who was hit with a wave of confusion. ‘Leaving her behind… does it get easier?’ Kevin sighted and smiled a little, knowing exactly how he felt. He carefully shook his head. Nick sighted and stared at the table in front of them. ‘I love her, you know… I really do.’ ‘I know Nick, that’s why it hurts so much.’ ‘She cried…’ ‘They always cry.’ ‘… I cried too.’ Kevin put his arm behind Nick on the couch. ‘You’ll survive.’ Nick appreciated how Kevin tried to comfort him, but it wasn’t working out. Clearly, Nick wasn’t sure if he’d survive. It was easy for Kevin to say, Danielle would be with them in 2 weeks. It was just 2 weeks of pain for Kevin, for Nick it was 2 MONTHS, 2 entire months. The door of the tour bus went open and Joe walked in. ‘Hey, look who’s early’, Kevin said with a hint of sarcasm. Joe replied with a sarcastic smile and threw his bags at him. He sat down on the other side of Nick. Nick gave his older brother a hug. This was nice, all of them together, touring, like the old days. At least for 2 weeks, then Danielle would be here and it’d be just Joe en Nick. But then again, Joe always has unfinished business to take care off. Nick scratched the back of his head and got up. ‘I’m going to lie down for a while, wake me when we’re in Georgia.’ He walked towards his bunk. He took off his shoes, dropped his pants, took off his necklace and crawled in. He could hear Joe and Kevin talk. The sound of their voices in the next room calmed him. He never realized how much he loved the noise, till he got his own place. He couldn’t hear exactly what they were saying, but it was about him. He could hear his name being dropped every once in a while. Nick closed his eyes and just listened. It would be perfect if she was there. If she was crawled against him, kissing his chest, telling him how she loves him. If he could run his hand through her soft hair and if he could feel her breath against his skin, but he couldn’t. She wasn’t there; she was home, with her family, already miles away and as the bus started driving those miles only improved.
Nick carefully placed his hand on hers as she stared out the window. She looked at him and tried to smile. She was crying too hard to give him an actual smile. She sat in front of the window, staring. ‘I miss him so much.’ Nick looked into her eyes and rolled his lips over each other. Even though he never got to meet her father, he knew he was a good man. It killed him to see her like this. ‘It’s not fair. He never hurt anyone. He was so sweet, he didn’t deserve to die.’ Her tears fell onto the floor as she held her head down. ‘Nobody deserved to die that day.’ Nick placed his hand on her lower back and carefully moved closer to her. They sat like that for a while, looking out of the window. Nick took her to New York for the memorial. This was the first time she had ever gone back to that city since 2001, it was too painful. Now, 10 years later, it still hurt, but she had to visit, so Nick took her. They both stared out of the window. They were able to see ground zero, there were already a few hundred people. She saw the image of that second plane over and over again in her head. ‘It’s not fair’, she repeated. Nick folded his arms around her and slowly rocked their bodies, trying to comfort her. After a while she finally calmed down a little. ‘I wish he could’ve met you, he would’ve liked you,’ she said. Nick smiled a little at her. ‘He liked cars and baseball too, you know? Once he caught me the game ball.’ She started tearing up again. Nick quickly wiped her tears away. ‘I’ll go get you a glass of water.’ He got up and walked out of the bedroom. When he came back he found her crying again. She was holding a picture. Nick kneeled next to her. ‘Look, this was a week before it happened.’ She showed him the picture. Nick put down the glass of water and looked at the picture. It was her father, holding her. They were both smiling. ‘I always keep it in my wallet, wherever I go.’ She took the picture back from Nick. She got up. ‘I should get dressed for the memorial.’ Nick watched how she walked into the bathroom and locked the door. He could hear her cry. She needed to be alone for a while, so Nick let her. Today wasn’t going to be one of the happiest days in their relationship, but it meant the world to her that Nick took her to New York. Even though she didn’t want to go at first, she was glad he took her.
Joe carefully looked at Mikayla and then at her dad. He felt as if his eyes were trying to kill him… he probably was trying that, though. ‘Listen dad… I’m not a kid’, Mikayla said. ‘I can date who ever I want, no matter what you say or do about it.’ She walked in with her bag, leaving Joe with her dad. Joe nervously looked at his feet. Why would she leave him like that? Was she trying to get him killed. ‘Joe, come,’ she demanded as she waved at him. Joe quickly walked in, Mikayla’s dad’s eyes following every step he made. ‘Mikayla I don’t think this is a smart move,’ Joe whispered. ‘Listen, he’s just going to have to accept or we’ll simply leave. For good.’ Mikayla smirked and pulled Joe in for a kiss. He moved away. ‘Don’t do that to him.’ Joe smiled at her father. ‘He loves you and he wants to protect you. Don’t you get that? He sees you’re growing up, but to him you’ll always be his little girl. Just accept that he might be a pain in the ass, but it’s because he loves you.’ Mikayla’s dad just stared at them as they were whispering. He couldn’t figure out what they were saying, but he knew it was about him, cause they kept throwing looks at him. Finally They approached him. ‘Sir, I respect your daughter and I’ll do everything in my power not to hurt her. I hope you can accept that your daughter and I’ll be spending time together, but I promise I’ll always get her home on time and I won’t take her anywhere without your permission. So… is it ok if I date your beautiful Mikayla?’ Joe hopefully looked at Mikayla’s dad. ‘I guess,’ he answered. He didn’t want to answer that, but he had to. He appreciated that Joe asked for permission, though, so he gave him permission. Joe thanked him and then took Mikayla to the movies.
Mikayla carefully looked at Joe. He sat behind her on the bed. ‘I know it’s awkward, ok? But I tried all I could to get us a different room…’ Joe took off his shirt and pants. He carefully made eye contact with her, hoping she wouldn’t figure out he was lying. He didn’t try to get them a different room, he liked this one. One huge bed and the two of them. It may sound odd, but he didn’t do it to have sex with her. He did it cause he wanted to hold her. He wanted to show how much he cared. If it would lead to sex, he wouldn’t mind though. So, maybe he did do it, hoping to get some, but if he wouldn’t, he’d be fine with the situation too. He felt how she looked at him. He smirked a little as he found her staring at his boxers. ‘What are you, a horse?’ She said teasingly, letting him know that she was indeed looking at him. Joe simply replied with a cocky smile, before putting on some sweatpants. ‘Shouldn’t you change?’ He folded up his clothes and put them on a chair standing close to the bed. She nervously played a little with her own fingers. ‘Aw, you shy?’ Joe asked her as if she was a little kid. She stuck out her tongue. ‘No.’ Mikayla denied it, but she was. She was a little insecure about her body. She knew she wasn’t a size 0, but she liked it that way… but with a guy like Joe, who’s used to dating supermodels, she was in fact a bit shy. ‘Do you want me to help you?’ Joe moved towards her with a smirk on his face. She got up and moved away from the bed. She heard Joe laugh a little. Mikayla finally took off her shirt and jeans. She knew her face looked like a tomato, but tried to hide it. Joe wasn’t exactly helping by just staring at her. She put on some shorts and a loose T-shirt. For a minute she questioned if she should take her bra off, but then she just did it. She might as well get comfortable. Joe stared full of confusion at Mikayla as she took off her bra without taking her shirt off. Joe got under the sheets and held them up for her. ‘Listen, mister… You stay on your side and I will stay on mine,’ she said while pointing her finger at him. He smiled: ‘yes, ma’am.’ She got under the sheets and gave Joe a quick kiss. ‘Goodnight.’ ‘Night’, Joe said, a little disappointed and he turned off the light. He couldn’t even hold her. Why was she playing so hard to get? She already had him, why still be like that? It stayed quiet for a while. Then Joe felt Mikayla’s hand on his face. He opened his eyes, but before they could adjust to the darkness, she kissed him intense. ‘Thanks for doing all of this, Joe’, she whispered. ‘Welcome’, he simply replied. Mikayla kissed him again. ‘I was thinking about going back home tomorrow… You know… we can’t run away forever.’ Joe simply nodded in agreement. ‘So we might as well make something out of this night.’ As tired as Joe was from driving all day, he immediately felt hyper after hearing that. He kissed her intense and rolled on top of her. This time she just giggled, instead of telling him to slow down. She let him have his way with her and she was glad she did. He was amazing, she’d never screamed like that before and she felt a heck lot better after that. Afterwards Joe wrapped his arms around her and they both fell asleep with a satisfied smile on their face.
